"Do not send delivery reports" on Exchange 2003 DL's
HiWe are using Exchange 2003 SP2.I had a question regarding the options surrounding Delivery Reports in Exchange 2003 DL's.If I select "Do not send delivery reports" then I notice that the email to the DL is sent with a Return-Path: of <>. So, if I have an incorrect address in a DL (e.g. an invalid Hotmail address as a Contact), then no NDR is returned. I assume this is because Delivery Status Notifications are sent by the destination SMTP server to the address in the Return-Path?Also, let's say I have two DL's:#Office - ALL#HR#Other#HR is a sub-DL of #Office -ALL.#Office - ALL iand#Other areset to "Do not send delivery reports", whereas #HR is set to allow them. Additionally, #HR and #Otherare restricted DLs, only I am only to send to them.I notice that if I have an invalid address in the #HR DL, then no NDR is sent, regardless of whether I send an email to#HR directly, or #Office - ALL.This is as expected due to the Return-Path field I mentioned above. If someone else sends an email to #Office - ALL, then no NDR is sent back to them stating that they don't have permission to send to #HR.However, if someone else sends an email to #Other, then they do receive an NDR stating that the sender does not have permission to email this DL. I am confused by this...doesn't this count as an Delivery Report? If not, then why doesn't the other user who sends to #Office - ALL recv notification that they don't have permission on #HR?

Hi,First I'd like to clarify the scenario like below, is that true?#Office---Do not send delivery reports.#Other---Do not send delivery reports.Accept messages from Only senders in the following list----you#HR ---send delivery reports to message originator. Accept messages from Only senders in the following list----you.Let's dothe followingtest and then post the result here.1. User in #Office send email to #HR, NDR? 2. User in #Office send email to #Other, NDR?3. User in #HR send email to #office, NDR?4. User in #Other send email to #office, NDR?Besides, please restart Microsoft Exchange System Attendant Services, Microsoft Exchange Information Store, update the RUS and then check the upon test again. More information to share with you: When you have the Send delivery reports to message originator setting selected on a distribution list, we are using the return path <user@domain.com>When you have the Do not send delivery reports setting selected on a distribution list, we use the return path <>. Selecting "Do not send delivery reports" disables the sending of read receipts for mail-enabled groups http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271419 Regards, Xiu
